There are many tips for saving electricity on the grid, but most of them repeat the same thing without explaining the main thing, namely the order of magnitude. Because of this, people carefully turn off charging from the outlet, saving pennies, and at the same time do not notice the devices that eat up the main part of the bill. Let's figure out how to calculate consumption yourself, where the money actually goes and what can be done about it.
What you pay now
A fixed price of 4.32 hryvnias per kilowatt-hour, established by a government decree, applies to the population, and its validity has already been extended several times, currently until October 31, 2026. For households with electric heating, there is a separate procedure, according to which consumption up to 2,000 kilowatt-hours per month is calculated at a reduced rate of 2.64 hryvnias, and the volume above this limit is already at the standard price.
These numbers are worth checking before each use, as the government reviews them regularly and up-to-date values are always available on your supplier's website.
How to calculate the consumption of any device
The power of the device in watts must be divided by a thousand to get kilowatts, then multiplied by the number of hours of operation, and the result will be consumption in kilowatt-hours, which remains multiplied by the tariff. For example, a heater with a capacity of 2,000 watts works four hours a day, which gives two kilowatts multiplied by four hours, that is, eight kilowatt-hours, and at a rate of 4.32, it turns out to be about 35 hryvnias per day or about a thousand hryvnias per month. The power of the device is indicated on the sticker on the case, in the passport or on the nameplate itself near the place of connection of the cable, and that is where you should look, and not rely on general tables from the Internet. For devices that work in cycles, such as a refrigerator or a washing machine, the passport power is not equal to the real consumption, since the compressor or heater is not turned on constantly, and in this case it is necessary to focus on the energy efficiency class and annual consumption specified by the manufacturer.
Where the money actually goes
The main mistake in the economy approaches is that people distribute attention evenly among all appliances, while costs are distributed extremely unevenly. Devices that convert electricity into heat consume the most, and these include electric heaters, boilers, electric stoves, ovens, irons and hair dryers. The power of such devices is measured in kilowatts, so every hour of their work costs tangible money. The second group consists of devices that work around the clock, and the main one here is a refrigerator, which consumes moderately, but continuously, due to which it gains a significant volume in a year. The third group is formed by lighting, the effect of which depends on the type of lamps, and the difference here is great, since a 60-watt incandescent lamp gives as much light as an eight-watt LED. The fourth group includes all small electronics, i.e. TVs, computers, routers and chargers, and it is the one that occupies the smallest share of the bill, although it attracts the most attention in savings tips. The practical conclusion is as follows: if you want to really reduce the score, you need to work with the first and second groups, not with the fourth.
About standby mode and why it is an overestimated way of saving
The advice to turn off all appliances from the outlet is repeated in every material about savings, and it is not wrong, but its effect is usually exaggerated. Modern chargers without a connected gadget consume fractions of cotton wool, so the annual savings from turning them off are measured in a few hryvnias. TVs and set-top boxes consume more, usually from one to several watts, and in total, this can give a noticeable, but still small amount to the apartment. It is worth doing this, because there is not much effort, but it is not worth putting hope in this habit of seriously reducing the account, because real money lies in a completely different place. There is also a separate argument for shutdown, not related to savings, namely safety, since live devices are vulnerable to network jumps, which is especially relevant with frequent shutdowns and subsequent shutdowns.
Two-zone counter as the main real lever
The biggest effect for most households is not saving on small things, but switching to accounting by zones of the day. A two-zone meter allows you to pay for the night rate between 11:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m., and the night rate is about half that of the day rate. Different sources give slightly different numbers, so the exact value should be clarified directly with your supplier before making a decision.
The meaning of the transition depends on the structure of your consumption, and it is maximum when a significant part of the electricity can be transferred to the night hours. Washing, operating the dishwasher, heating the water in the boiler and charging the energy storage devices are good for carrying, while lighting and cooking are not. The approximate logic of the calculation looks like this. Calculate what percentage of your monthly consumption you can actually transfer to night time, and if this share exceeds a third, the meter installation will pay off in an acceptable period. It is also worth considering the costs of the meter itself, along with the work on its installation, as well as the fact that devices that work at night will require a delayed start timer, which is available in most modern washing machines and dishwashers.
What really works
Replacing incandescent lamps with LED ones gives the fastest result among all measures, since the difference in consumption reaches seven times with the same brightness, and the cost of the lamps themselves is small. Proper operation of the refrigerator affects more than it seems, and here it is important not to put it next to the stove or battery, leave a ventilation gap from the wall, do not load warm food and defrost regularly, if there is no automatic system in the model. The operation of the boiler is optimized by lowering the heating temperature, as each additional degree requires energy, and most people set the temperature noticeably higher than necessary and then dilute the water cold. The washing machine consumes the bulk of the energy to heat the water, so switching from sixty-degree to thirty-degree mode for normal washing makes a noticeable difference, and fully loading the drum saves more than two incomplete cycles. The electric kettle should be filled with exactly the amount of water that is needed now, because the heating of an extra liter accumulates in a significant amount per year every time. Energy efficiency classes when buying new equipment are of real importance for devices that work permanently or for a long time, that is, for refrigerators, washing machines and air conditioners, while for rarely used devices, the overpayment for the class does not pay off.
About subsidies
If the costs of communal services exceed fifteen percent of the total income of the family, it is worth checking the right to a housing subsidy, and this can be done on the website of the Pension Fund or at the service center. Certain categories of citizens are entitled to discounts ranging from twenty-five to one hundred per cent, and these include persons with disabilities, combatants, pensioners in rural areas and other socially vulnerable groups. This is the part that people often do not know about, although it affects the account much more than any everyday habits.
How to find your own electricity consumers
The most accurate way to understand where exactly your electricity is going is to take the meter readings, turn off all the appliances in the apartment and see if it continues to count.
Next, you can turn on the devices one by one and see how the accounting speed changes, and this method gives a real picture instead of theoretical tables. An even more accurate option is to use a wattmeter, that is, an outlet with a meter, which costs several hundred hryvnias and shows the consumption of a specific device for the period. For a family that is seriously engaged in savings, such a purchase pays off in the first months, because it allows you to find real consumers instead of fighting imaginary ones.
Summary
Saving on electricity works on a principle well known in any field of optimization, namely by concentrating efforts on the largest items of expenditure instead of evenly fighting everyone at once. A single heater that runs for an extra hour every day costs more than all the chargers in an apartment per year combined, and it is the understanding of this proportion that distinguishes real savings from ritual actions. Therefore, it is worth starting with counting the consumption of the three most powerful devices in the house, because after that it will become obvious where the money actually goes.
