The Main Equation
True passive income works according to a simple formula, meaning that your monthly income equals the available capital multiplied by the annual return and divided by twelve. This leads to an uncomfortable conclusion. Passive income is a function of capital, not ingenuity. If there is no capital, there is no passive income either, and no scheme changes this. Everything that is presented as passive income without capital actually requires either significant preliminary work or is a scam.
How Much Is That in Numbers
Let us take the most profitable legal instrument on the Ukrainian market, namely government bonds, whose yield in 2026 is approximately from fifteen to seventeen and a half percent per year for hryvnia-denominated issues. Let us use sixteen percent for the calculation, since the weighted average yield at the beginning of the year was close to this value. To receive ten thousand hryvnias per month, that is, one hundred and twenty thousand per year, approximately seven hundred and fifty thousand hryvnias of capital is required. To receive twenty thousand per month, approximately one and a half million is required. To receive an amount comparable to the average salary, approximately two million hryvnias is required. For a bank deposit, the figures are noticeably worse, since income from it is taxed at a combined rate of twenty-three percent, that is, eighteen percent personal income tax plus five percent military levy. At the same nominal rate, the net income from a deposit is approximately twelve percent, and therefore for the same ten thousand per month, you already need about one million hryvnias. These figures are the answer to the question of why passive income is rarely a topic for people without savings.
About Inflation, Without Which the Calculation Is Incomplete
Here, another honest adjustment is needed. A nominal return of sixteen percent does not mean that your capital grows by sixteen percent in real terms. Part of this return merely compensates for the depreciation of money, and the real return equals the nominal return minus inflation. The practical conclusion is that conservative hryvnia instruments primarily preserve the value of savings rather than increase them quickly, and they should be viewed precisely this way. The current inflation rate should be checked on the website of the National Bank before making a calculation, since it changes.
What Is Truly Passive
Now about the instruments, and let us start with those that require a minimum of action from you after the investment. Government bonds, also called military bonds, are the most profitable option for individuals in terms of the ratio of return and taxes. Hryvnia-denominated issues in 2026 have rates of approximately fifteen to seventeen and a half percent per year depending on the maturity period. Dollar-denominated ones provide approximately three to four percent, while euro-denominated ones provide slightly less. The main advantage lies in taxation, since interest income and investment profit from government bonds are not included in the taxable income of an individual, meaning that neither personal income tax nor military levy is withheld. Because of this, at the same nominal rate, the net income from bonds turns out to be approximately one quarter higher than that from a deposit. The rate is fixed for the entire term, which is an advantage when market rates decline and a disadvantage when they rise. They can be purchased through banks or through government services, and according to market data, individuals have invested significant amounts in such securities, meaning that the instrument is widespread rather than exotic. Bank deposits are simpler and easier to understand, but they lose in terms of net return precisely because of taxation. Their advantages remain deposit guarantees within the established amount and greater flexibility regarding terms.
What Is Conditionally Passive
This category generates income but requires your participation. Real estate rental provides a regular cash flow, but requires significant initial capital, carries risks of vacancy, property damage, and problems with tenants, and also requires tax registration. In addition, when calculating the return, you need to take into account not only the rental payment, but also taxes, repairs, utility costs during vacancy periods, and depreciation. Dividends from stocks are a classic option, but for a Ukrainian investor they are associated with access to markets, currency issues, and taxation at a rate of twenty-three percent for most investment income.
What Is Sold as Passive Even Though It Is Not
This is the most important section, since this is where people spend their time. Content on social networks and video platforms generates income only after you have built an audience, and this is measured in years of work. In addition, income stops as soon as you stop publishing, meaning that it is not passive by definition. I wrote in detail about the real rates in the materials about Instagram and YouTube. Digital products are sold with the promise of creating them once and selling them forever, but the limiting factor there is not the product, but the sales channel, and it needs to be maintained constantly.
Affiliate programs provide a percentage of sales through your link, but they work only when you have an audience, meaning that they are an addition to the previous point rather than an independent source. Product businesses and dropshipping require daily order processing, meaning that they are work rather than passive income, and I wrote separately about their real economics. None of these areas is bad in itself. The problem arises when they are presented as passive, because this causes a person to plan their time and money incorrectly.
What Should Be Avoided
Any offers with a guaranteed return that is significantly higher than the market rate, meaning anything that promises significantly more than the current government bond rates at the same level of risk. Investment offers that come through messages in messengers and through advertisements on social networks. Schemes in which your income depends on attracting new participants. Platforms without transparent information about who is behind them and where they are registered. Offers that require urgency, since limited time for making a financial decision is a classic sign of pressure. I wrote in detail about the mechanics of such schemes in the material about recognizing fraud.
The general rule is simple. Return and risk are connected, so any offer with a higher return at supposedly the same risk means that the risk simply has not been named.
Where to Start
If you do not have capital yet, you should start not with choosing an instrument, but with building savings, since without them the rest of the questions make no sense. The first step is an emergency fund for several months of expenses, kept in an accessible form rather than invested, since its purpose is not return, but to avoid selling assets at an unfavorable moment. The second step is the first conservative instrument with a small amount, in order to understand the mechanics in practice. The third step is consistency, since for building capital, systematic saving matters more than return on small amounts. The fourth is diversification, meaning distribution among different instruments and currencies. And separately, it is worth remembering that at the initial stage, increasing income from your main activity has a significantly stronger effect on the final result than optimizing the return on small savings.
