In our articles about each platform, we kept ending with the same conclusion: the main money does not come from platform payments, but from direct agreements and affiliate programs. It is time to take a closer look at affiliate programs, since this is the only monetization model that works across all platforms simultaneously and has no follower-count threshold.
Why They Work Where Advertising Does Not
Advertising rates are tied to the level of the market, and Ukraine belongs to the second tier, so any platform will pay us less for the same number of views. Affiliate commissions are calculated differently, based on the value of an actual sale. If someone follows your link and buys equipment worth UAH 20,000, your percentage is calculated from that exact amount, and it does not depend on which tier the Ukrainian advertising market belongs to. This leads to the main advantage. With the same audience size, affiliate programs usually generate more than advertising, and the difference becomes more noticeable as the price of the product you recommend increases. The second advantage is the absence of a threshold. You do not need a thousand followers, moderation approval, or a channel of a certain size, meaning you can start with any audience.
Three Payment Models
It is worth distinguishing between them because they are suitable for different niches. Payment per sale means receiving a percentage of the purchase amount. This is the most common model for products. Payment per action means receiving a fixed amount for an application, registration, app installation, or product subscription. It works in finance, education, and services. Payment per lead means receiving a reward for a potential customer's contact details, that is, for a completed form. The practical difference is significant. The percentage from a retail product sale is usually a few percent, whereas a fixed payment for signing up for a financial service can reach hundreds or thousands of hryvnias per action.
Which Areas Pay the Most
The logic is the same as in advertising: payments are based on the value of a customer. Financial products offer the highest payouts because a bank or insurance company earns money from one customer for years. These include cards, loans, insurance, and investment services. Educational platforms pay for an enrolled course, and the amounts here are significant because the product itself is expensive. Subscription services pay either a fixed amount or a percentage of the first payments, while some of them pay a percentage for the entire period during which the customer remains with them. Real estate and cars provide high payouts per application because of the high value of the transaction. Retail offers the lowest percentages, usually a few percent, but with the highest conversion rate because the purchase threshold is low.
Ukrainian and International Programs
For a Ukrainian audience, local programs of major marketplaces work well because that is where your readers actually make purchases. Conversion rates in local programs are several times higher than in international ones, and the reason is simple: a familiar platform, familiar payment methods, delivery within the country, and support in Ukrainian. International programs are available, and a classic example is the affiliate program of a major international store, but it works less effectively for a Ukrainian audience because of logistics, customs duties, and prices. The exception is when your audience is Western, in which case the situation is reversed. I wrote separately about how to work with a Western audience through platforms with search traffic. Specialized cost-per-action networks are a separate category, and this is where financial and educational offers with high payouts are concentrated.
Where Affiliate Programs Work Best
Platforms with search traffic work best because people arrive with the intention of finding or buying something. Your own website or blog provides the highest conversion rate because you control the context in which the recommendation appears. Themed chats and communities convert better than channels because a recommendation within a live conversation is perceived differently from an advertising post. Video reviews work well because people can see the product in action. The worst-performing platforms are those where it is impossible to place a direct link, and where you have to lead people through an additional step, during which most of them are lost.
What Determines Your Income
The relevance of the recommendation to the audience is the main factor because an irrelevant offer does not convert, regardless of the payout amount. Trust is more important than reach, which is why a small blog with a loyal audience often earns more than a large channel with random readers. The price of the product also matters, since a percentage of an expensive purchase is greater than a percentage of a cheap one. The context of the recommendation matters too: a review based on personal experience converts several times better than a simple link. The number of pieces of content that continue working over time is also important, because an article with an affiliate link can generate income for years if it can be found through search.
The Main Mistake
It is placing a link and waiting. Affiliate programs work like sales, not advertising. People follow your link when you have answered their question, not when you have simply shown them something. The practical consequence is that review, comparison, or specific problem-solving content generates several times more than a mention in a feed. The second common mistake is recommending something you have not used yourself. One bad recommendation costs more than the commission because the audience remembers it.
A Legal Issue People Forget About
Hiding affiliate links is a problem for several reasons. Platform rules usually require content to be labeled as advertising or affiliate content. The rules of most advertising systems directly limit the proportion of affiliate content on a website, meaning that a website consisting mainly of reviews with links will not pass moderation. I wrote about this in my article on setting up advertising. Audience trust is the most valuable asset, and disclosing an affiliate link costs you less than your reputation.
Taxes
Income from affiliate programs is income, and the mechanics depend on the source of the payment. Ukrainian programs usually make payments to an individual entrepreneur's account under a contract. International programs make payments through payment services, and the same mechanics apply as for any funds received from abroad: payments must be received into a business account, and income must be declared in the full amount accrued.
