At What Age Can You Work Officially

The Labor Code establishes the general rule of sixteen years, from which a person can get a job independently. From the age of fifteen, it is allowed to work with the written consent of one of the parents or a person replacing them. From the age of fourteen, students may be employed for light work during their free time from studying, provided that it does not harm their health or interfere with their studies, and also with the consent of their parents. Employment must be formalized with an employment contract, and work without formalization is neither legal nor safe.

How Many Hours Are Allowed

The restrictions depend on age and on whether the school year is in progress. During holidays, teenagers from sixteen to eighteen years old can work up to thirty-six hours per week, and those from fourteen to sixteen up to twenty-four. During the school year, these limits are reduced by half, that is, to eighteen hours per week for older teenagers and to twelve for younger ones. These restrictions exist not to make life more difficult, but because work should not replace education.

Rights That Adults Do Not Have

This is the part that almost nobody knows about, although it makes official employment more advantageous.

The salary is calculated at the level of an adult employee, despite the smaller number of working hours.

Annual leave is thirty-one days, that is, more than the standard adult leave. A probationary period does not apply to minors at all. Dismissing a minor at the employer's initiative is more difficult, since the consent of the children's affairs service is required for this.

A medical examination before employment is mandatory and is paid for by the employer.

What Is Prohibited

Teenagers are not allowed to work in dangerous and harmful conditions, in underground work, at night, overtime, or on days off. There are also restrictions on lifting and moving heavy objects. If an employer offers something from this list, it is a violation, and it is not worth agreeing to it regardless of the promised payment.

Real Ways to Earn Money

Official employment during holidays remains the simplest and safest option. These include food establishments, retail, courier delivery, work in summer camps, and community work. Such vacancies should be sought through the employment center, which has an official portal, or directly from local companies.

Tutoring younger students is one of the best options if you know a subject well. An eighth-grade student can quite reasonably explain mathematics to a third-grader, and you can start with the children of people you know.

Skills that can be sold online. These include simple graphic design, editing short videos, typing and formatting texts, and basic page setup. It is important to understand that the entry threshold here is not money, but the fact that the skill must actually exist, and acquiring it takes months.

Helping neighbors and acquaintances with walking dogs, taking care of animals during vacations, cleaning, and small purchases for elderly people. This does not look impressive, but it provides real money and a reputation from which a permanent clientele grows.

Selling your own things that you no longer need, that is, clothes, equipment, books, and games. This is one-time income, not permanent.

Handicrafts and handmade products make sense when you already know how to make something by hand.

What Does Not Exist

Here honesty is necessary, because this is exactly where teenagers are deceived most often. There is no way to earn significant money without skills, without experience, and without spending time. There is no payment for likes, video views, or marking products, since these actions have no value for a business, and therefore it is not profitable for anyone to pay for them. There is no job for which you have to pay first yourself. There is no easy money in cryptocurrency, betting, or investment schemes offered on social networks.

I wrote in detail about the mechanics of such schemes in a separate material about earning money online.

The Most Dangerous Offer

This part is the most important in the entire material. Teenagers are regularly offered easy money for simply giving their bank card, registering it in their own name and handing it over, or receiving someone else's transfers onto it and forwarding them further for a percentage. This is not a job. This is participation in money laundering, and liability for such actions falls on the cardholder regardless of whether they understood what was happening. The consequences are not only problems with the law, but also blocked accounts and a damaged credit history for years to come, that is, even before a person has time to begin adult life. There is one rule here, without exceptions. Your bank card is your personal card, and you cannot give it to other people under any circumstances and for any amount of money.

What Is Worth Remembering About Safety

Tell your parents about any job offer before you respond to anything. This is not about control, but about the fact that an adult may notice something you may not notice. Never pay for a job, for training for it, for account activation, or for equipment. Do not send photos of documents to people you do not know personally, since such data can be used to create a digital profile for further fraud. Do not meet a stranger alone in an isolated place, and arrange first meetings in public places and tell someone close to you where you are going. Be alert if you are asked not to tell anyone about the job, since this is the most reliable sign of a problem. Do not agree to urgency, because no genuine vacancy will disappear within an hour. If something has already happened, tell an adult about it immediately, since delay always makes the situation worse, and shame here costs more than the mistake.

What Parents Should Know

Official employment of a teenager is safer than any informal side job, since it provides a contract, fixed hours, and legal protection. Agree with your child on a simple rule that any job offer is discussed with you before responding, and most importantly, make sure that they are not afraid to tell you about a mistake. Pay attention to the appearance of unexplained money, new cards, or transfers, since this is exactly what can indicate involvement in someone else's schemes.
