The Main Confusion
A lot is written about YouTube income, and the figures in different sources differ by more than ten times. First, let us understand where this discrepancy comes from, because without this, any calculation will be useless.
The Confusion That Makes All Estimates Too High
There are two indicators that are constantly mixed up. The first is the cost of a thousand ad impressions for the advertiser. This is the amount paid by the company placing the advertisement. The second is the creator's income per thousand views. This is what actually reaches you. The difference between them is fundamental, because the platform keeps approximately forty-five percent of the advertising revenue. That is why most estimates of how much YouTube pays look inflated, because they provide the first indicator where they should provide the second one. You should focus exclusively on the second one, and you can see it in your own channel analytics in the revenue section.
How Much Is It in Ukraine
Here I have to be honest about the sources, because they contradict each other significantly. Some analytical materials give approximately $0.40 to $1.20 per thousand views for a Ukrainian audience. Others give a range from $0.50 to $4.00. Others, referring to industry services, give around $4, and some even give more than $5. The more-than-tenfold difference is explained by several things. Audience geography is the main factor. A channel with a Ukrainian name can have half of its views from Poland, Germany, or the United States, and this changes the income several times over. The topic matters no less. Finance, real estate, legal services, and technology have high rates because advertisers in these areas pay more. Entertainment, music, and children's content have the lowest rates. The season also matters, because advertising budgets increase toward the end of the year and fall sharply in January. The format and duration affect income through the number of ad placements. The practical conclusion is that for planning, it is worth taking the lower end of the range, approximately one dollar per thousand views for a purely Ukrainian audience, and considering everything above that a pleasant deviation.
Entry Requirements
The Partner Program has two levels, and they should not be confused. Early access opens features for viewer support, brand partnerships, and merchandise sales, but not advertising. For it, you need five hundred subscribers, three public uploads during the last ninety days, and either three thousand hours of long-form video watch time over twelve months or three million short-form video views over ninety days. Full monetization opens advertising revenue and a share of viewer subscription revenue. For it, you need one thousand subscribers, as well as either four thousand hours of long-form video watch time over twelve months or ten million short-form video views over ninety days.
Pay attention to two things. The hours are counted over the last twelve months, meaning they expire, and if a channel stops, the figure gradually decreases. Short-form video views are counted over ninety days, meaning that this path requires not just a large number of views, but a large number of views regularly.
Why Short Videos Make Almost No Money
Here is the most important part for those who are counting on this format. Revenue per thousand views on short-form videos is approximately three to fourteen percent of long-form video revenue, and in absolute figures it is usually from three to seventeen cents. Let us calculate what this means. To earn one hundred dollars from long-form videos at a rate of one dollar, you need one million views. To earn the same amount from short-form videos at a rate of ten cents, you need ten million views. One industry calculation gives an even more specific example, according to which reaching a certain amount using only short-form videos would require approximately 1.8 million views per month. In other words, short-form videos are not a direct way to make money. They are a way to build an audience that will then watch long-form videos, and that is how they should be viewed. It is also worth taking into account that only public short-form videos watched for longer than the first few seconds are counted, while replays are not counted.
How Many Views Are Needed for Specific Amounts
Let us calculate this for a Ukrainian audience at a rate of one dollar per thousand views, meaning the lower realistic threshold. One hundred dollars per month requires approximately one hundred thousand views per month. Three hundred dollars requires approximately three hundred thousand. One thousand dollars requires approximately one million views per month. To understand the scale, it is worth comparing this with the size of the channel. A channel with ten thousand subscribers usually gets several tens of thousands of views per month, meaning its advertising revenue is measured in tens of dollars. This is exactly why most creators with a noticeable audience make money on YouTube not from the platform's advertising.
Where the Money Actually Is
The conclusion here is the same as in the material about Instagram, meaning that the platform is a showcase, not an employer. Brand integrations provide the main share of income in most niches, and their price is not tied to the revenue-per-thousand-views indicator, but is negotiated separately. Your own products and services work even better because you do not share the revenue with anyone. Affiliate programs provide a percentage of sales through your link. Viewer support in the form of paid messages and thanks is already available at the early level of the program and can be significant in streaming formats. In other words, platform advertising revenue should be viewed as a foundation, not as the goal.
How Long It Takes
The realistic picture looks like this. Reaching the early-access requirements takes months of regular work. Reaching full monetization usually takes from six months to several years, depending on the niche and publishing frequency. The first advertising money will be symbolic, meaning tens of dollars per month. Income comparable to a salary appears for a small number of creators, and usually not earlier than after one or two years of consistent work. Therefore, planning a transition to YouTube as your main source of income without having another source is not advisable.
Payments and Taxes
The platform transfers funds through the advertising system, and the payment threshold is one hundred dollars, meaning smaller amounts accumulate until the following month. From a tax perspective, the situation is the same as with any other income from a foreign source. Systematic income requires registration as an individual entrepreneur, and the most common choice is the third group of the simplified taxation system with a rate of five percent plus the military levy. The key detail is that income is declared in the full accrued amount, rather than the amount that arrived after deductions, and this is where people most often make mistakes. I wrote in detail about this mechanism in the material about freelancing, since it is the same.
What Affects Your Income the Most
The niche determines advertiser rates, and this is the strongest factor. The difference between financial topics and entertainment is measured in multiples. The geography of viewers changes income several times with the same number of views. Video length affects the number of ad placements. Audience retention affects how many advertisements viewers actually see. The season creates predictable fluctuations. The share of subscribers using the paid version of the service adds additional income.
Common Mistakes
Planning income based on the cost-per-impression indicator instead of the creator's revenue. Relying on short-form videos as a source of money rather than as an audience acquisition tool. Relying on figures from other people's articles instead of your own analytics. Choosing a niche based on interest without considering whether it has advertisers. Publishing irregularly, causing watch hours to expire faster than they accumulate. Waiting for monetization before looking for other sources of income instead of working with them in parallel. Failing to formalize your activity until the moment when the income becomes noticeable.
