Monitoring popular job-search platforms showed that there are not many vacancies for artificial intelligence specialists in Ukraine, namely from ten to one hundred and forty-five on different resources. For comparison, thousands of positions for salespeople and drivers are open on the same platforms at the same time. That is, this is not a mass profession, but a narrow segment that is still being formed. This does not mean that the field is without prospects. It means that you should not enter it expecting quick employment after a short course.
Real Salaries According to Ukrainian Vacancies
A general-profile AI specialist, who in different companies is called both a prompt engineer and an AI manager, earns approximately from nine to seventy-three thousand hryvnias. An AI process automation specialist earns approximately from ten to one hundred and twenty-eight thousand. A developer who builds AI-based solutions earns approximately from twenty-one to two hundred and fifty-seven thousand. An artificial intelligence engineer earns approximately from thirty-five to three hundred and forty-three thousand. A copywriter who works with AI earns approximately from eighteen to forty-five thousand. A model training specialist earns approximately from thirteen to forty thousand. The overall market range is approximately from eighteen to one hundred and thirty-seven thousand hryvnias, while the majority of employers do not indicate a salary at all.
What Can Be Seen From These Figures
The lowest ranges belong precisely to those positions whose entry is promised to be the fastest, namely an AI copywriter and a model training specialist. The highest ranges belong to positions that require engineering training, namely a developer and an engineer. The difference between the lower limit of a copywriter's salary and the upper limit of an engineer's salary is approximately twenty times, and it is explained not by the ability to write prompts, but by the presence of technical knowledge. For context, the median salary of an artificial intelligence engineer according to an industry survey is approximately two thousand three hundred and seventy-five dollars per month, meaning that this level exists, but it belongs to people with the appropriate training.
About the Prompt Engineer Profession
As a separate position, this profession exists in Ukraine, but there are dozens of vacancies of this type, not thousands.
Training companies present it as a separate specialty with a low entry threshold, and this wording should be read carefully, since it is a product they sell. The reality looks like this. The ability to formulate prompts for a model is a skill, not a profession, approximately like the ability to use search or work with spreadsheets. This skill increases your value within another profession, but by itself it is rarely a reason for a separate position. It is telling that in descriptions of Ukrainian vacancies of this type, the requirements usually include not only prompts, but also English proficiency, graphic editor skills, an understanding of project management, or programming. That is, even where the position is called exactly that, you are paid for a combination of skills, not for one.
Where They Actually Pay the Most
People are not paid for the ability to use a tool, but for the ability to solve an expensive business problem with it. The highest ranges in Ukrainian vacancies belong to automation specialists, that is, people who identify processes that can be automated and implement AI-based solutions in them.
The difference between this role and writing prompts is fundamental, since it requires an understanding of business processes, the ability to work with integrations, and responsibility for the result. The second group is developers and engineers, that is, those who build the products themselves rather than use ready-made ones. The third group is specialists for whom AI is an addition to a strong core profession, that is, a marketer, analyst, designer, or lawyer who, through the use of tools, does more within the same unit of time. This third path is the most accessible for the majority, since it does not require changing professions.
The Strengthening Strategy Instead of Changing
Trying to change your profession to become an AI specialist means entering a segment with a hundred vacancies and high requirements. Adding these tools to your existing profession means that you compete in your usual market but do more. In practice, it looks like this. A copywriter who prepares material twice as fast takes twice as many orders. An analyst who has automated report preparation frees up time for more complex work. A designer who quickly generates concept options goes through the approval stage faster. Income here grows not through a new position, but through productivity, and this growth is noticeable within several months, not years. In freelancing, the effect is even more straightforward, since your income directly depends on the amount of work completed. I wrote separately about the mechanics of freelancing.
Where the Market Is Moving
Globally, the fastest-growing positions are not those related to writing prompts, but adjacent areas.
The number of vacancies in the field of artificial intelligence security has increased by approximately ninety-one percent over the last twelve months, according to a professional network. The field of forensic analysis of artificial intelligence systems is growing even faster, where the number of vacancies has increased by approximately one hundred and sixty-nine percent. Salaries in the upper segment of these fields reach hundreds of thousands of dollars per year, although these are upper compensation limits for specific positions in large companies, not average values across the industry. For a Ukrainian specialist, the practical meaning is that adjacent areas are currently less competitive than the obvious ones.
What Should Be Avoided
Courses that promise a separate profession with a low entry threshold and high income, since this combination itself is a sign of sales rather than a description of the market. Focusing on figures from foreign markets without adjusting for the Ukrainian market, since the difference is several times. The idea that a tool will replace the absence of domain expertise, meaning that you can sell process automation without understanding the processes themselves. Overestimating the speed, since real vacancies require a combination of several skills rather than one.
What to Do Practically
Determine which profession you already have domain expertise in, meaning that you understand the tasks from the inside. Find two or three processes in your daily work that take the most time and can be automated. Learn tools specifically for these processes, rather than in general. Record the result in numbers, meaning how much time you freed up or how much you increased the amount of work. These figures are precisely your argument both in negotiations about a raise and in proposals to clients. If you want to go deeper, the next step is not a course about prompts, but a basic understanding of working with software interfaces and automation, since this is precisely what the vacancies with the highest ranges pay for.
