The average cost of an individual tutoring lesson in Ukraine at the beginning of 2026 is approximately three hundred and seventy-four hryvnias per hour, and over the course of a year, it increased by approximately sixteen point three percent. For comparison, the average copywriter salary increased by approximately four percent over the same period. Both professions are related to knowledge and text, but their dynamics are opposite, and the reason for this difference is the key to the entire topic.

Why This Profession Has Not Declined

Information can now be obtained for free in a few seconds, explained in simple language and adapted to your level. Demand for tutors has not fallen as a result, and this is worth understanding. The reason is that a tutor does not sell information. They sell structure, meaning the sequence in which material is presented. Regularity, meaning a fixed time when you are required to sit down and study. External accountability, meaning a person who will notice if an assignment has not been completed. And feedback, meaning pointing out your specific mistake rather than a typical one. None of these four things can be replaced by access to information, since a student's problem is usually not that the material is unavailable. This is the same pattern I wrote about in my article on copywriting. Payment for providing information is disappearing, while payment for judgment and responsibility remains.

Current Rates

The average hourly cost across the country is approximately three hundred and seventy-four hryvnias. In Kyiv, the average price is approximately four hundred and fifty hryvnias, while preparation for the National Multi-Subject Test in the capital costs approximately three hundred and ninety-five hryvnias. The actual range on platforms is much wider, from approximately two hundred hryvnias per hour for beginners to seven hundred or more for teachers with a reputation and a large number of reviews. Typical prices charged by verified tutors on major platforms range from approximately three hundred and fifty to five hundred hryvnias per hour. The most expensive subjects for entrance exam preparation remain English, mathematics, biology, and physics.

Why These Particular Subjects Cost More

The logic is the same as in all other fields: prices are determined by the relationship between supply and demand. Subjects required for admission to popular degree programs have stable demand regardless of the economic situation, since parents cut spending on everything except preparing their children for admission. At the same time, there are objectively fewer specialists capable of providing high-quality preparation in physics or higher mathematics than there are people who can help students improve in general subjects. The practical conclusion for those choosing a field is that a narrow and challenging specialization pays significantly better than general homework assistance.

How Much Can You Earn Per Month?

Now for an honest calculation, since multiplying an hourly rate by eight hours every day produces unrealistic figures. A realistic workload for a tutor is approximately fifteen to twenty paid hours per week, which is already full-time work. The reason is that every paid hour comes with additional time spent preparing lessons, checking assignments, communicating with parents, and handling organizational matters, and this time is unpaid. At fifteen hours per week and the average rate, the result is approximately twenty-two thousand hryvnias per month before taxes. At twenty hours, it is approximately thirty thousand. For context, a top-category schoolteacher receives approximately sixteen thousand hryvnias with all additional payments, and this difference explains why many teachers move into private practice.

Seasonality That Must Be Taken Into Account

This is the biggest practical feature of the profession, and it undermines the plans of those who fail to anticipate it.

Demand peaks between September and May, with the most intensive period occurring in spring before entrance exams. Demand drops sharply in summer because students are on holiday and preparation has been completed. In practice, this means that monthly income in November and July can differ several times over, and you need to plan your budget for the year rather than for a single month. There are ways to smooth out seasonality, including working with adult students who study independently of the school calendar, running summer intensive courses, and preparing students for exams that take place outside spring.

Where to Find Students

Specialized platforms are the fastest way to get started because demand is already there. It is worth looking carefully at their commission models, since these differ. On one of the major Ukrainian platforms, a commission is charged only for the first agreement with each student and amounts to approximately the cost of two hours of lessons. After that, all subsequent lessons with that student are entirely yours. This model is beneficial for long-term cooperation and disadvantageous for one-off consultations. Online schools hire teachers as employees or for regular cooperation, and some of them accept people without online teaching experience and provide training. Income there is usually lower than in independent practice, but there is stability and a flow of students without your involvement. Word of mouth remains the main channel for experienced tutors, since satisfied parents recommend you to others, and this channel has no commission. Social media works as a showcase, meaning that a page featuring useful content related to your subject attracts students without advertising. Direct outreach to schools and educational centers provides a flow of students, although at a lower rate.

How to Increase Your Rate

Reviews are the most important asset because parents primarily choose tutors based on them. Therefore, your first students are valuable not for the money they bring in, but for their reviews, and you should definitely ask for them. Results are the main argument, meaning students' actual exam scores, the percentage of students who gain admission, and improvements in grades. Track these from the very beginning. Narrow specialization increases your rate, meaning not mathematics in general, but preparation for a specific exam at a specific level. Verified qualifications, meaning education and certificates, influence trust and your chances of being listed as a verified teacher on platforms. Group lessons increase your hourly income while lowering the price for each student, meaning both sides benefit.

What to Consider Before Getting Started

The online format removes geographical limitations, meaning that a tutor from a small town can work with students from the capital at capital-city rates. The technical requirements are minimal: a stable internet connection, a camera, a headset, and a convenient tool for working collaboratively with text or formulas. Power outages are a real risk for this profession, so backup power for your router and laptop becomes a working tool rather than a convenience. I wrote separately about choosing equipment. Working with children means working with their parents, and you should agree on communication formats, reporting, and lesson cancellation rules from the outset.

Taxes

Systematic income from tutoring constitutes entrepreneurial activity. The most common choice is the second or third group of the simplified taxation system, and the specific option depends on whom you work with and the income level you expect. Working with foreign students through international platforms follows the same process as any other income from abroad, which I discussed in my article about freelancing. It is worth discussing the appropriate tax group with an accountant once, since correcting a mistake made at the beginning takes longer than a consultation.

Summary

The average tutor's rate in Ukraine is approximately three hundred and seventy-four hryvnias per hour and increased by approximately sixteen percent over the year, which is four times faster than copywriting salaries. The reason for this difference is that a tutor does not sell information, which has lost its value, but structure, regularity, and external accountability, meaning things that cannot be replaced by access to learning materials. A realistic income for full-time work during the busy season is approximately twenty-two to thirty thousand hryvnias per month. The main thing to consider before getting started is seasonality, since the summer slump undermines the plans of those who calculated their income based on a single successful month.
