Most of the materials about Internet fraud are arranged in the same way: a list of current schemes with an explanation of how each works. The problem is that such a text dies in six months. Schemes change constantly - a new service appears, and in a week a new scam appears around it.
Therefore, this material is built differently. This is not about specific schemes, but about mechanics that remain unchanged. Because fraudsters do not exploit holes in software, but the peculiarities of the human psyche - and they are not updated. If you understand the principle, you will also recognize the scheme that will be invented in three years.
The main thing to understand
Almost all modern online fraud is social engineering. Not evil, not viruses, not technical magic. This is a conversation in which you are convinced to do something yourself.
Cyber police name the three most common categories as sale of non-existent goods, phishing and calling «from bank». Please note: in none of them will the victim be broken. She does everything with her own hands - transfers money, enters card data, dictates the code from SMS. This is the key. A fraudster cannot take your money. He can only convince you to give them away.
Five levers that are always pressed
No matter what the circuit is in front of you, it will have at least one of these elements. Usually several.
1. Urgency. «The account will be blocked for an hour». «Two places remain». «Confirm now or lose access».
This is the most important marker of all. The goal is to give you no time to think and check. No legitimate organization requires a financial decision to be made in five minutes. The bank will not block your account while you call it back at the official number.
Rule: the more urgent - the slower it is necessary to act.
2. Authority. The interlocutor introduces himself as the bank, the police, the service security service, the tax office, and the company's management. The goal is to turn off your skepticism, because it is inconvenient to argue with a representative of the authorities.
A simple one works here: a real institution will not be offended if you hang up and call back the number from the official website yourself. Fraudster - will be offended and start pressing.
3. Isolation. «Don't tell anyone, it's confidential». «Your husband will not understand». «This is closed information for investigation».
A request not to tell third parties about the conversation is almost a hundred percent sign of fraud. Legitimate procedures do not require you to be secret from your relatives.
4. Unusual payment method. Transfer to an individual's card instead of a company account. Cryptocurrency. Replenishment through the terminal. Gift cards.
These methods have one thing in common: the money cannot be returned. That is why they are asked.
5. Too good a proposal. The product is twice as cheap as the market. Investment with guaranteed return. Winning a draw in which you did not participate.
The oldest rule works here: if something looks too good to be true, it is.
One habit that closes 90% of cases
If you remember only one of this text, let it be the following. Never follow the link or call back the number sent to you by the interlocutor. Always go to the organization yourself: dial a number from the back of the bank card, open the application manually, go to the site by typing the address in the browser. Phishing works precisely because people click on what is sent. A fake page can look identical to a real — interface copied in its entirety, including logos and designs. The difference is only in the address, and it can differ by one letter. A recent example of this mechanic: fraudsters send messages allegedly from the OLX security service demanding urgent confirmation of the phone number. Going to the link ends with the theft of the profile and bank data. The special insidiousness here is that the fraudster initiates a real action on the service - and you receive real code from OLX. This creates a sense of legitimacy, although the request was not initiated by you. Hence the second rule: check not only where the SMS came from, but also whether you started this action yourself. If you did not click «login» - the code is not for you.
OLX specifically emphasizes that their representatives do not ask to send confirmation codes in chats or social networks and do not send links for verification. This principle is universal for any service.
The code from SMS is the same as the keys to the apartment
A one-time verification code cannot be called to anyone. Never. No to the bank representative, no to the support service, no to the police, no to the buyer on the marketplace. Legitimate services never ask for this code, because it is designed precisely to confirm that you personally perform the action. The question «dictate the code» means exactly one thing: the person on the other side is trying to log into your account or make a payment. The same applies to the CVV code on the back of the card, the PIN code and the full card data. In order to send you money, a card number is enough. Everything else is data to withdraw money.
Special category: when the check confirms a lie
Previously, the advice «just google this person» worked. Now it's not always.
A demonstrative case happened in the USA: a man pretended to be a professional football player for years, building a legend in social networks. When victims searched for information about him, search engines indexed the fake pages he created, and AI summary at the top of the output synthesized from them the claim that he was truly a professional athlete. The fraudster began to use screenshots of these answers as evidence. The mechanics here are as follows: a regular output shows a list of sources, and you can see that the information comes from an Instagram account. The AI summary produces a ready-made conclusion without a visible hierarchy of sources - and the reader perceives it as a fact.
Conclusion: Check the statement where it is officially recorded. Social networks, LinkedIn and search engine summaries are not primary sources. They only retell what a person wrote about himself.
Quick checklist
Before transferring money or entering data, ask yourself six questions:
Am I being fitted?
Am I asked not to tell anyone?
Did I follow the link sent or did I open the site myself?
Did I initiate this action myself, or was I informed about it?
Does the money go to the company's account or to the individual's card?
Can I check this organization in the official register?
If the answer to at least one question is alarming, stop. Losing an hour to check is cheaper than losing money.
If it already happened
Immediately call the bank at the number on the card and block the card. If the transfer has just passed, there is a chance to stop it - but the window is measured in minutes. Change passwords to compromised accounts and enable two-factor authentication. Call 102 if the fraud is happening right now - the 24-hour line receives messages and starts prompt response. Submit an application to the cyber police through the official website cyberpolice.gov.ua. Cyber police analyze digital traces and request data from banks and providers. Save everything: mail screenshots, phone numbers, account details, transfer time and amount. Without this, an investigation is almost impossible. And separately: do not be ashamed. Shame is the main reason why people do not contact the police. Because of this, fraudsters work for years with the same schemes. Your statement — is not a recognition of your own stupidity, but a contribution to stopping this group.
The most important thing is about loved ones
The most vulnerable category is the elderly. Not because of naivety, but because they grew up in an environment where a phone call from an institution was really a way of communication.
What really works:
Agree with your parents on a simple rule: any conversation about money is an excuse to call you before doing anything. Not «think», but call. This removes the need for a person to assess the situation himself under pressure. Tell them not about the schemes, but about the signs. They will forget the scheme, and «drive me up - so it's scammers» - they will remember. And most importantly: make sure they are not afraid to confess to you. A person who is afraid of condemnation will be silent - and will lose more.
Summary
Schemes will change. New services, new drives, new technologies will appear - fraudsters are already using generated voices and videos. But the mechanics will remain the same: you will be hurried, you will be presented as someone respectable, you will be asked for secrets and you will be asked to transfer money in a way that cannot be rolled back. Therefore, the most reliable protection is not knowledge of specific scams, but one habit: before any action with money or data, stop and check independently, through an independent channel. A minute of pause is cheaper than anything else.
