First, Erase the Data

This applies to any scenario, including disposal, since the device can end up in someone else's hands at any stage. Log out of all accounts, and especially from your Google or Apple account, since a device with someone else's account linked to it cannot be properly transferred to another person. Remove the SIM card and memory card. Perform a full factory reset through the system settings, rather than simply deleting files, since data deleted in the usual way can be recovered. For computers and laptops, it is more reliable to remove the storage drive and keep it with you if the device is going to be disposed of, since this finally removes the issue with the data. Before erasing, make sure that everything you need has been transferred, and pay particular attention to two-factor authentication applications, which are not transferred automatically, as I wrote about in detail in the material about switching to a new phone.

A Second Life for an Old Phone

The most interesting part, since even a device unsuitable for daily use is capable of performing one specific task for years. A surveillance camera can be made from any old smartphone using the appropriate application, and the phone connected to power and Wi-Fi transmits the image to your main device. A car dashcam is made from the same set, and at the same time you do not mind leaving the old phone in the car. A navigator for a car works even on a weak device if you download maps for offline use.

A music player for the car or for workouts allows you not to drain the main phone. A children's device with a strictly limited set of applications is a much better solution than giving a child your work phone. A device for reading books works quite normally if you do not need an electronic-ink screen. A backup phone in case the main one is lost or broken is simply worth keeping charged, and in our conditions this has additional value. A remote control for smart technology can be made from phones that have an infrared port.

A Second Life for an Old Laptop

Replacing the storage drive with a solid-state drive and adding RAM turns a slow laptop into a perfectly usable device, and this is the cheapest upgrade possible. Very often, the issue is not an outdated processor, but precisely the old mechanical drive. A lightweight operating system based on Linux gives a second life to a device that cannot handle modern Windows, and this is enough for working with a browser and documents. A home media server or file storage can be made from an old laptop that simply stays turned on and distributes content to other devices. A computer for a child or for parents does not require modern specifications if the tasks are limited to a browser and video calls.

Selling

It is worth selling what still has market value, and first of all this concerns smartphones, laptops, and tablets no older than five or six years. Estimate the real price based on listings for similar models in the same condition, rather than the original cost of the device. Describe the flaws honestly, since a hidden problem means a return and a damaged seller reputation, while the difference in price is usually small. Take normal photographs in daylight from all sides, including the defects.

Sell safely, since sellers themselves have become the main target of scammers on marketplaces, as I wrote about in a separate material. Complete accessories, the box, and the receipt noticeably increase the price, so it is worth looking for them before publishing the listing.

Exchange and Transfer

Electronics stores periodically launch programs for exchanging old equipment for a discount when buying new equipment, and among the chains that do this are Comfy, Epicentr, Foxtrot, and Rozetka. The terms change, so it is worth checking whether the promotion is available directly before buying. Manufacturers also have their own exchange programs, although in Ukraine they work selectively. Giving equipment to those who need it often turns out to be a better option than selling it for little money. Working laptops and tablets are accepted by schools, libraries, public organizations, and volunteer initiatives, and a list of current needs can usually be easily found in local communities. Older relatives often need exactly a simple device, and your previous phone is better suited for this than a new budget one.

Disposal

When the device no longer works and cannot be repaired, disposal remains, and there are several important points here. Electronics cannot be thrown into ordinary garbage, and this is not only about the environment, since the disposal of equipment is regulated by legislation, and responsibility is provided for throwing away a household appliance. The reason for the prohibition is entirely practical. Batteries contain heavy metals that get into soil and water, while cases and boards contain valuable raw materials that can be returned to circulation. To understand the scale, it is worth giving an estimate according to which approximately three hundred and fifty kilograms of silver and thirty-four kilograms of gold can be extracted from one million smartphones.

Where to go in practice. Electronic scrap collection points accept small equipment, cables, and boards, and this is the most convenient option if you have one or two devices. Eco-points in Kyiv accept small electronics, batteries, lamps, and thermometers, and you can find the nearest one on the city's eco-point map. Electronics stores accept old equipment during promotions, sometimes for a discount, sometimes for free. Specialized recycling companies work with both businesses and individuals, although some of them serve only legal entities. Here it is worth honestly acknowledging the problem. In small cities, collection points often do not exist at all, and in that case an option is to accumulate the equipment and take it during a trip to the regional center or use postal delivery, since some services accept parcels.

Separately About Batteries

Batteries, power banks, and battery cells require special attention, and not only because of their chemical composition.

A swollen or damaged lithium battery poses a real fire hazard, so such devices should not be stored at home for a long time. Do not puncture, disassemble, or try to flatten the battery under any circumstances. Before handing it over, cover the contacts with tape to prevent a short circuit. Batteries and battery cells are accepted separately, and collection points for them exist even where large equipment is not accepted, since battery containers are often located in supermarkets.

What to Do With Cables and Accessories

Cables, chargers, and headphones are also electronics and are subject to the same rules.

Before handing them over, check whether they can be used with something you use, since standards are becoming unified, and a cable from a device sold long ago may well work with a new one.

Working chargers and power banks are often needed by acquaintances or volunteer initiatives, especially in our conditions.
