There are dozens of materials with collections of free courses online, and they list hundreds of options. The problem is that access to knowledge stopped being a bottleneck a long time ago. The bottleneck became something else, since most people sign up for courses and do not reach the end. Therefore, this material is built around how to choose one needed program and bring it to completion, rather than around another list.
Why People Quit Courses
The reasons repeat themselves, and understanding them helps more than any catalog. Signing up costs nothing, and therefore quitting costs nothing either. Free access removes the psychological barrier to entry and at the same time removes the reason not to give up. The goal is formulated vaguely, that is, a person wants to learn marketing or improve their English, and without a clear result it is impossible to understand when you have achieved it. Several courses are taken at once, after which none receives enough attention.
Learning does not have a place in the schedule, and is done when there is time, which never comes. Knowledge is not applied, because of which it is quickly forgotten, and the person feels that they are wasting time.
How to Choose
Start with a specific result, not a topic. The difference between wanting to understand analytics and wanting to learn how to build a sales report in spreadsheets is fundamental, since the second can be checked. Take one course at a time and complete it before starting the next one.
Look at the number of hours and honestly assess whether you have those hours in your week. Check the date when the material was created, since in technical topics a course from three years ago may teach something that no longer exists. Watch the first lesson before signing up, because the instructor's manner affects completion more strongly than the content of the program. Check whether practical assignments are available, since a course consisting only of video lectures gives the feeling of learning without the learning itself.
Ukrainian Platforms
Prometheus is the largest Ukrainian online course platform, and its model is mixed, that is, revenue from paid programs is directed toward creating free courses and translating programs from well-known universities into Ukrainian. The topics are broad, from humanities to computer science.
Diia.Education is a platform of the Ministry of Digital Transformation, and the format here is more diverse than classic courses, since besides them there are educational series, tests, guides, webinars, simulators, and podcasts. This platform is convenient for short practical topics.
EdEra specializes in educational programs and materials for school and self-education.
VUMonline offers courses on personal development, entrepreneurship, and social topics, while the lectures are given by business school teachers and practitioners.
The practical advice is not to look at the number of courses in the catalog, but at the availability of a program specifically on your narrow topic, since broad catalogs create the illusion of choice.
International Options with Free Access
Large platforms have a mode in which course materials are available for free, while payment is charged only for the certificate and assignment assessment. This mode is usually called an audit mode, and it is enough if you need knowledge rather than a document. Individual companies offer their own educational programs in professional fields, and some of them are available without payment. Language learning and basic subjects are well covered by free resources that do not require any conditions. It is worth considering that the overwhelming majority of international content is in English, so the language level often becomes a real limitation, and in that case it is more logical to focus on it first.
What Certificates Are Worth
Here honesty is needed, since most materials on this topic promise more than reality delivers.
A certificate of completion of a free online course by itself rarely influences an employer's decision, since it confirms only the fact of completion, not the level of skills. What you did with the help of this knowledge carries significantly more weight, that is, a specific project, calculation, text, layout, or working code. The practical conclusion is to plan your learning around a result that can be shown from the very beginning. Not a course in spreadsheets, but a spreadsheet that you built. Not a design course, but three layouts. This also changes motivation, since a completed project gives a much clearer feeling of progress than a line in a list of completed programs. An exception is industry certifications recognized in a specific profession, but they are usually paid and have a different nature.
How to Complete a Course
Set aside a fixed time for learning in your schedule, for example, two hours on designated days, and treat it as a meeting rather than something for later. Start with a small amount, since thirty minutes that you actually do every day give more than three hours that you plan for the weekend and do not do. Write short summaries after each lesson in your own words, because this both reinforces the material and shows progress. Apply each block immediately, without waiting for the program to be completed.
Find someone to whom you will tell about your progress, since external accountability works better than internal discipline. Allow yourself to quit a course that turned out to be unsuccessful, and do it consciously rather than through gradual fading, because the first frees up time, while the second leaves a feeling of failure.
What to Pay Attention To
Free courses that are only a funnel into an expensive program can be recognized by the fact that the useful part is constantly postponed to the next level. Promises of guaranteed employment should be checked separately, since the wording usually contains conditions. Courses with deadlines and countdown timers on the registration page use the same techniques as any sale, and I wrote about them in the material about dark patterns. Materials on narrow technical topics quickly become outdated, so the date matters more here than the number of reviews.
